Landmark & Heritage Meeting Minutes

MINUTES OF THE BRUSLY LANDMARK & HERITAGE COMMISSION
October 17, 2016

A meeting of the Brusly Landmark and Heritage Commission was held on Monday October 17, 2016, Brusly Town Hall, Brusly, Louisiana.

Chairman Rills called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M. Chairman Rills led the Pledge of Allegiance. A roll call determined the following:

Commission Chairman:               Jim Rills
Commission Members Present: Billy Bourgeois, Margaret Canella, Sara Grady, Rose Jackson, Shirley Jordan, Henry Soniat
Commission Members Absent:  None
Advisory Members Present:       Billy Hebert
Advisory Members Absent:        Kevin Durbin, Brian Falcon
Others present:                            Joanne Bourgeois

Upon motion of Commissioner Bourgeois; seconded by Commissioner Grady, the minutes of the July 18, 2016, meeting were unanimously approved as written.

Landmark Plaque Applications:
Ms. Bourgeois presented a Landmark Plaque application for the home located at 401 N. Kirkland, known as the Allen Aillet Sr. Home, presently owned by Bobby & Jennifer Lee. Ms. Joanne Bourgeois also presented a Landmark Plaque application for the home now located at 915 E. Main Street, known as the Jeanne & Lawrence Hebert Home, presently owned by Walter & Lucy Peavy Landry. After a brief discussion, a motion to recommend both homes to the Town Council as Landmark Plaque Recipients was made by Commissioner Jackson; seconded by Commissioner Canella. The motion passed unanimously.

Former Landmark Site Applications:
Ms. Bourgeois presented the Former Landmark Site application for 238 S. Kirkland Street, the 2nd location of the original Brusly Drug Store, now the property of Lynn LeJeune. After a brief discussion, a motion to recommend the site to the Town Council as a Former Landmark Site, was made by Commissioner Grady; seconded by Commissioner Jordan. The motion passed unanimously.

Other Business:
Chairman Rills opened the floor for nominations for the office of Commission Chair. Upon the nomination from Commissioner Grady; seconded by Commissioner Jordan, Commissioner Rills was elected as Landmark & Heritage Commission Chair.

Chairman Rills opened the floor for nominations for the office of Commission Vice-Chair. Upon the nomination from Commissioner Canella; seconded by Commissioner Bourgeois, Commissioner Soniat was elected as Landmark & Heritage Commission Vice-Chair.

Chairman Rills reported that Kevin Durbin had respectfully declined reappointment as an Advisory Member to the Landmark & Heritage Commission due to personal and professional commitments.
It was decided to recommend the reappointment of Brian Falcon and Billy Hebert to the Commission as Advisory Members to the Town Council, and ask that the Council appoint a 3rd Advisory Board Member.

Public Comment:
Chairman Rills called attention to a letter from Steve & Terry Guidry thanking the Commission for awarding a landmark plaque to their property at 203 N. Kirkland, known as the Bourg House.

A motion was made by Commissioner Bourgeois to adjourn; seconded by Commissioner Grady. The motion passed with a unanimous vote. Commission Chairman Rills adjourned the meeting at 6:54 P.M.
